Sunriver, OR
Sunriver is one of my favorite places in the world. It's where I feel most at peace. We come to Sunriver at least once a year and often go with no plans other than bike riding, swimming, reading, resting, and spending time together as a family.
Sunriver is located about 20 minutes from Bend, OR. It's also about a 3.5-4 hour drive from Portland depending on the way you go. Sunriver even has its own airport. So, if you have your own plane, you can fly right in, ride a golf cart to the lodge and get taken right to your house. We see planes flying in and out all the time. Although, this is not something we ever do (or could afford), it does look pretty convenient. I also know that some people choose to fly into the Redmond Airport, if coming from further distances.
There are two entrances to Sunriver. One is Cottonwood and the other is the main entrance. Whichever one you take, you instantly enter a resort community with homes amidst towering pine trees and brush, and if you come in the summer months, you will see bike riders everywhere. If you come during the winter, you usually enter a winter wonderland covered in white snow.
When it comes to accommodations, there are several options when staying in Sunriver. Probably the most popular option is to rent a house or condo. There are several rental companies you can do this through. We have personally rented through MT. RESORT PROPERTIES and SUNRIVER RESORT. We have had good experiences with both. You can also search sites such as VRBO or AirBNB.
Renting a house provides more conveniences while staying in Sunriver. Homes almost always come with bikes, sleds, and a variety of other outdoor equipment. This isn't always the case, so you would want to check the rental listing to see what they come with. Another thing most rentals come with are passes to the SHARC, which is an aquatic center with and outdoor water park. You will want to check when renting to make sure the house provides passes to the SHARC. Also, when renting a house or condo, you have a kitchen and that provides so much flexibility when it comes to eating. There is nothing better than a good BBQ on the deck of your house.
Another option for accommodations is staying at SUNRIVER RESORT. You can rent hotel-like rooms of varying sizes. We have also done this. The downside to this is that most of these don't have a kitchen and are a standard hotel room. When we have chosen to stay here, it's because they were offering a sale and we were only coming for a few days and could handle the small space for a short period of time. If you are planning on staying for a good period of time, renting a house is the way to go.
Once settled into your accommodations, there are so many things to do in Sunriver. I will go over some of the things you can do on other pages, because they deserve a page of their own.
Sunriver makes an excellent vacation spot for a family, a large family gathering or reunion, a bachelor/bachelorette party, or even a wedding. It truly provides you with an escape to a mountain oasis and away from the busyness of everyday life.
