Central Oregon
Central Oregon is my happy place. As soon as you step out of the car, the smell of sweet pine envelops you and welcomes you to this peaceful place. There are several great places to visit while in Central Oregon, providing you with a lot to do while visiting. This makes it a place you can come back to over and over again.
HOW TO GET HERE
Central Oregon is about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Portland, Oregon. There are a few different ways to go. One is to head south to Salem and then veer east through the Santiam Pass. The other way is to go up and over Mt. Hood. There is also another way we have taken, which is to go out to the Dalles and head east. Depending on the time of year you go can often dictate which way you go. During the summer, we always take the Santiam Pass. We love the drive past Detroit Lake and through Sisters, OR. If it's winter, we often head the Mt. Hood direction, as it tends to be a bit safer during the snowy season. One year we did go the route of the Dalles, as both Mt. Hood and Santiam Pass were going to get hit with snow and that route was not. We were so glad we went that way, because the other two routes were backed up for hours and our family got stuck. There are also airports that fly into this area, but it's not as convenient as PDX.
WHAT TO DO AND SEE
Like I said before, there is so much to do in Central Oregon. From skiing, snowboarding, and sledding in the winter, and hiking, bike riding, golfing, fishing, canoeing, floating the river, and so much more in the summer. Central Oregon is all about being outdoors and because of its beauty, that's where you will want to be.
One of the biggest things Central Oregon is known for is its beer. It's been amazing to watch this area explode with breweries. The BEND ALE TRAIL is a fun adventure in and of itself.
Overall, Central Oregon has a little of everything for everyone in your family. Check out below all the different adventures and activities you can do while visiting.
